"J. H. CAMPBELL, M. D., a prominent physician, surgeon and farmer of Knox County, was born May 30, 1824, in Harrison County, Ky., and is the fourth of six children born to Matthew and Dorothy (Martin) CAMPBELL, natives of Pennsylvania and Maryland, respectively. They were married in Harrison County, Ky., where they lived with their parents in childhood. The territory in which they settled was named CAMPBELL in honor of our subject's ancestors, but is now divided into three counties. Matthew CAMPBELL, the grandfather of our subject, built the first tavern between Cincinnati and Lexington. Our subject's parents remained in Kentucky until 1826, when they removed to Decatur County, Ind., and settled on a farm. In the fall of 1847 they immigrated to Knox County, Missouri, where they resided until their respective deaths in 1867 and 1869. The father was a pioneer settler and farmer of Knox County, and at the time of his death owned 160 acres of land. Our subject received common-school education in Decatur County, Ind., and at the age of nineteen began to study medicine at Greensburg, in that county, under Dr. William ARMINGTON, until the spring of 1847, when he went to Knox County, Missouri, and bought a forty-acre tract of land, on which he has since resided. He began to practice his chosen profession in the summer of 1847, but the fall of that year went to the State University of St. Louis, which he attended two consecutive sessions, graduating from the medical department and receiving his diploma in the spring of 1849. Since that time he has devoted his attention to his practice and farming, and has added to his original possessions until he became one of the largest landholders in the county, at one time owning 1,600 acres. Sarah Ann WILEY, daughter of Elijah and Mary (Boring) WILEY, was married to our subject in Rush County, Ind., November 15, 1849. She was born in the same county December 20, 1829. To Mr. and Mrs. CAMPBELL seven children having been born, three of whom are living, viz: #3. 2nd Son: Taylor R. CAMPBELL, a leading physician, of Grainfield, Kansas; #4. 3rd Son: Martin CAMPBELL, living on a portion of the old homestead; and #8. 5th Dau: Ada Lena CAMPBELL, who is attending the Howard Female College at Fayette, Missouri. Mr. CAMPBELL is one of the most eminent and honored citizens of Knox County, and by his energy and ability now occupies a high rank in his profession. He is a Democrat, and in 1872, was elected State representative by that party, serving satisfactorily for two years, and attending two sessions. During the township organization he represented Shelton Township, having been elected one of the commissioners. Formerly he was a Whig, but, although now an active member of his party, he is no aspirant for political honors. He is a prominent member of the F. & A. M., being a Master Mason of Novelty Lodge No. 181; He is also a member of the R. A. Chapel, No. 93, at Edina. He and his family are active members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South."

Mrs. A. E. (Bessie) Halladay, 86, of 1024 E. Harrison, died in a Kirksville hospital Friday evening. Mrs. HALLADAY suffered a fractured hip several weeks ago and had been hospitalized since that time.The daughter of William & Fannie (Long) CAMPBELL, she was born at Hurdland on Nov. 29, 1879. In May 1900 at Brashear she was married to Albert Edward HALLADAY and to this marriage two daughters were born. Surviving are her husband, her daughters, Mrs. Albert E. (Hortense) GRASSLE of Auburn, N.Y., and Mrs. Lester (Alberta) BIGGS of Marshalltown, Ia., one brother, Glen CAMPBELL of Quincy; Three grandchildren and One great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alex CAMPBELL and David CAMPBELL. Mrs. HALLADAY was a life-long resident of Adair county and had resided in Kirksville since 1913. She was a member of First Methodist Church where she and her husband were one of the oldest couples in the church.Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 in the Funeral Chapel of Davis & Davis with the Rev. Marvin Fortel, pastor of First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Hills cemetery.

Gladys Melissa HOWERTON age 85 of Lee's Summit, Missouri formerly of Hurdland, Missouri passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at the John Knox Village Care Center in Lee's Summit, Missouri.Born November 11, 1916 in Knox County, Missouri she was a daughter of Alex M. and May (Fleak) CAMPBELLOn August 1, 1936 at Brashear, Adaie County, Missouri she was united in marriage to Glen Grover HOWERTON who preceded her in death on January 16, 1990.Her parents, two sisters, Pauline (Campbell) COOK and Juanita (Campbell) HOWERTON also preceded her in death. Surviving are: one son, (Did NOT Name Him!) two daughters, (Did NOT Name Them!) two sisters, (Did NOT Name Them!) eight grandchildren (Did NOT Name Them!) and six great grandchildren. (Did NOT Name Them!) Mrs. HOWERTON was a life long resident of Knox County. She and her husband resided south of Hurdland, Missouri where they were engaged in farming until their retirement. After their retirement they spent several months of the year in Texas. For the past two years Mrs. HOWERTON resided in Lee's Summit.She was involved in church activities in Missouri and Texas; she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.Interment: Park View Memorial Gardens, Kirksville, Missouri

St. Lawrence, KS 66044)Opal was born October 10, 1922 in Hurdland, [Knox County] Missouri to Anna and Martin CAMPBELL. She was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area, most recently of Independence, MO and Olathe, KS. She retired after 23 years at the Social Security Administration and was previously employed by Ford Motor Company and North American Aviation. She also taught 1-6 grades at Van Horn School in Hurdland and was Valedictorian of her high school class in �.. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and four sisters.
