Swain County wins first 1A boys track title; Mountain Island Charter's Reggie Daniel named MOP (2024)

Swain County narrowly defeated Mountain Island Charter to claim the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A boys track & field state championship at N.C. A&T University on Monday.

The Maroon Devils finished the day with 81 points, just six points ahead of Mountain Island Charter's 75 points. It marks the first-ever boys track title for Swain County.

Swain County had two first-place finishes, including a record-breaking performance in shot put. Nse Uffort recorded a distance of 61-09.50 in shot put, breaking the previous record of 60-10.25 set by Farmvile Central's Torrey Prayer in 2005.

The Maroon Devils also took first place in the 4x400 relay. The team of Josh Collins, Josiah Glaspie, Connor Brown, and Abhi Patel finished with a time fo 3:28.16, narrowly beating the team from Thomas Jefferson, which crossed the line with a time of 3:28.90.

Swain County recorded second-place finishes in the 4x800 relay and the 3200 meter run.

Reggie Daniel of Mountain Island Charter was named the most outstanding performer of the championship. Daniel set a new meet record in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 38.30. The previous record was 38.58 and was set by T.J. Wilson of Princeton in 2010. Derrick Reid Jr. of Carver, who finished second in the race, also beat the old mark with a time of 38.40.

Daniel also placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.99. He was just 0.02 seconds behind Carver's Jaden Gause-Hughes.

Corvian Community (46), Carver (37), and South Stanly (36) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
