The best chocolate cake recipe,I have posted countless cake recipes here in my blog and made tons of cakes in my 20 years of baking; but the crown for the best chocolate cake recipe is for this cake. One bite of this chocolate cake with its oh! so! perfectchocolate buttercream frosting is enough to say, yeah! this one is the best chocolate cake recipe - ever!!

, 4 yeah! I made this cake 4 times last month. First for our 20th wedding anniversary, then for Homey's birthday, exclusively for the kids, and lastly when my brother and family visited us. I know that is quite a lot of chocolate indulgence in a month but let me tell you that you just can't resist this ONE!

The great thing about this cake recipe is, its quite different from the other cakes. The butter, water, sugar, vanilla, and cocoa is heated up in a saucepan and allowed to come to room temp...then dunk in the rest of the ingredients and blend away...it couldn't be more easier than this. Notice, you do not have to wait for the butter to come to room temperature, just pop it in the sauce pan along and watch it melt away!.

The deep dark (cocoa) color of the cake is the result of the cocoa powder being cooked...simple! no expensive dark chocolate either.

Are you ready, to make the best chocolate cake... ever!!

Step by step tutorial:
Lets prepare the cake pan first. Since I planned to frost the cake, I lined the bottom with a parchment (butter) paper. Simply place the cake pan on the butter paper and with a pencil or pen draw a circle along the outer edge of the pan. Cut it out and place it on the greased cake pan (remember to grease and dust the sides too).

Into a sauce pan, add in water, sugar, butter, vanilla essence, and cocoa powder.

Switch on the fire and with a spoon mix it well. Once it starts to boil, simmer it for 2 minutes (it will spill over, so careful on that). Allow this to cool down to room temp, go take a nap or a shower or listen to Ed Sheeran's song "Thinking Out Loud" which is my current fav.

Add flour into a large bowl, add in baking powder and baking soda; mix well with the spoon. Preheat oven to 180 degree C.

Add in the cooled (room temp) chocolate-butter syrup and eggs, Beat/cream with a hand held beater until pale.

Pour into the prepared cake pan and bake for 40 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow it to cool completely before frosting it with the best buttercream frosting.

INGREDIENTS

  • Water: 1 cup (250 ml)
  • Sugar: 1 1/2 cups
  • Butter: 1 1/2 sticks (150 gms)
  • Vanilla Essence: 1/2 tsp
  • Cocoa Powder: 3 tbsp
  • Flour: 1 1/2 cups
  • Baking Powder: 2 tsp
  • Baking Soda: 1/2 tsp
  • Salt: 1/4 tsp
  • Eggs: 2

METHOD:

  1. Prepare the cake pan as instruced in the tutorial and keep aside.
  2. Into a sauce pan, add in water, sugar, butter, vanilla essence, and cocoa powder.
  3. Switch on the fire and with a spoon mix it well. Once it starts to boil, simmer it for 2 minutes (it will spill over, so careful on that). Allow this to cool down to room temp.

NOTES

  • Use 250 ml cup for this recipe and not 200 ml.
  • It is very important to cool down the choc-butter sauce to room temperature.
  • I used salted butter.
  • I have also tried adding a tsp of instant coffee powder to the sauce and it did helped to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • I used a 9 inch cake pan. You can also bake in two smaller cake pans and sandwich the frosting. To cover the cake top; only half of the frosting was needed.
